Tyne and Wear Metro – iPhone App v1.0

Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK – Appshay today is pleased to introduce Tyne and Wear Metro 1.0, their Travel app that provides a complete, interactive, handy metro guide to the metro system in Northeast England. The app features an interactive station map, departure boards, search & browse stations function, journey planner, an animated route map showing start and finish points, nearby places of interest, integrated Google Maps, and GPS-aware location of stations closest to the users current location. The Travel app is ideal for tourists, commuters, or occasional travelers, serving Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, South Tyneside, North Tyneside, and Sunderland. Appshay and the Tyne and Wear Metro app are not affiliated with Nexus, administrators of the Tyne and Wear Metro.

Following launch in portrait mode, the app displays five navigation buttons on the bottom tab bar: Map, Plan, Nearby, Locate, and Lines. The default function is Map, which displays a floating map of the Tyne and Wear metro. The easy-to-read map moves effortlessly and displays both the Green and Yellow metro lines. A vector graphic, the map may be zoomed in to a maximum of 4x magnification, while remaining sharp and clear. In addition to every train station, the map also includes symbols for the following: Main Bus Interchange, Rail Interchange, Ferry, Park & Ride, and Airport.

Tapping on any station brings up the station name and line, plus buttons that allow the user to: view the station location on a street level Google Map, set the station as the starting point of a journey, set the station as the ending point of a journey, set the station as a favorite, or view an updated list of the next five departures from each platform. All timetable data is updated live. Also available in the Map mode is a search function that permits browsing a scrolling list of stations or text input. Selecting any entry activates a pulsating blue circle around the station on the large map.

Tyne and Wear Metro’s Plan function is a complete trip planner. The traveler scrolls to select the starting station and ending station, and the app automatically computes the route, number of stops, and number of interchanges. Each circle station along the route contains a flashing amber dot, and the approximate time for the journey is given. Standard Google Map green and red pushpins indicate beginning and ending points. The complete Itinerary may be displayed with a scrolling map and written directions.

The Nearby button brings up a scrolling list of places of interest, including: airports, beaches, monuments, castles, museums, and historical sites. Each can be located on a street level Google Map. The Locate function activates the iOS device’s GPS function within the app and produces a text readout. The Lines function separates the search function between the Green and Yellow metro lines, which together serve 60 stations.
