Before getting help for children with learning disabilities in school, it’s important to understand the nature of these disabilities.

You see, these children aren’t unmotivated, lazy, or unintelligent. Their brains simply process information in a different way than others, because their brains are wired a bit differently. The most common areas in school that require help for children with learning disabilities include math, reasoning, reading, writing, speaking and listening.

According to the Coordinated Campaign for Learning Disabilities, a learning disability is “a neurobiological disorder in which a person’s brain works or is structured differently.” The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act is a federal law that provides help for children with learning disabilities by funding special needs schools, which are schools for students with learning disabilities, and defines a learning disability as a disorder in which one or more of the basic psychological processes that are involved in understanding or using spoken or written language.

However, learning disabilities are not attention disorders, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Learning disabilities can, and often do, occur at the same time, but the two aren’t the same. It should also be noted that a lack of educational opportunities, such as frequent changes of schools, poor school attendance, or lack of basic skill instruction, don’t cause learning disabilities.

It’s important to know the nature of these issues so as to know when it’s appropriate to seek out help for children with learning disabilities. Children will need such help to learn how to overcome and lead a more fulfilling life. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments. Read more like this.
